Your Super Power Success System: Cognitive Flexibility

Dear Friends,

On October 17th, I introduced to you a system that you were born with, and which is key to understanding where you are right now in life, what got you to this point, and how you can get to where you want to be and do exactly what you want to do.

I call this your Super Power Success System and I introduced you to the component of neuroplasticity in that newsletter.

Today, I’ll continue to answer the question from October 17th and introduce the next component of your Super Power Success System that is intimately linked to neuroplasticity–it is cognitive flexibility.

To explain Cognitive Flexibility, I often start by describing it as that familiar state of an open mind that we can all understand.

We could also call this component and capacity psychological flexibility, or even thought flexibility.  In simple terms, we  commonly see this as having an open and active mind that has a propensity for positive change. Key here is that cognitive flexibility is not only functioning through our waking and sleeping life, but you can also learn how to develop it and apply its power in very specific ways to achieve success.

In my research, wellness, healing, and coaching work, cognitive flexibility has a twofold meaning:

  1. Cognitive Flexibility refers to your inherent ability to transform from a lower state of being to a higher state, emphasizing the role that your conscious thought plays in this process; and
  2. Cognitive Flexibility also refers to a state of consciousness that is a bridge between the lower and higher states.

The lower state is often called the lower self, lower consciousness, or ego—it is a dimension often characterized by negative thoughts and emotions, obstacle seeking, stress, worry, depression, illness, or disease. The higher state is often called the higher self, higher consciousness, or spiritual self—it is a spiritual state that is categorically distinct, since it is defined by an absence of all things negative or degenerative, of stress, depression, illness, and disease; and it is expressive only of positive and spiritual qualities, of peace, health, vital energy, joy, certitude, and wholeness.

The dynamic in-between state of cognitive flexibility is a steppingstone between the lower self and the higher self; the lower consciousness and the higher consciousness; the limited self and the limitless self; the physical self and the spiritual self.

The powerful role that cognitive flexibility plays in restructuring the self cannot be overly emphasized. Cognitive flexibility is a bridge to a transformative type of mystical experience that is naturally oriented toward wholeness and oneness.

It is also a process by which you let go of the lower self and surrender to your higher nature; it is a progression whereby you move from divisive, negative, or dualistic thinking into the blissful state of oneness. The state of oneness that you will enter at the height of your meditations is a core experience of pure consciousness, which automatically integrates spirit into your being and brings a healing energy and deep sense of happiness and thankfulness to you. When you consider that all aspects of a human being are interrelated, you can see the inherent power of cognitive flexibility as the transformational influence of thought within your being at any given time.

A great deal of my work has dealt with the power of music, sound, and your voice in meditation and creating the space of consciousness from which all your dreams and goals can be realized.  The most important point here is that music naturally engenders cognitive flexibility. Just ask yourself what happens to you when you listen to music that you love. Your mind, emotions, body, and spirit immediately change, moving in fresh and positive ways.
